Before Saluda Was Saluda
Cherokee Roots
The name Saluda comes from the Cherokee word Tsaludiyi, meaning “green corn place.” Long before the town was established, this area was valued for its fertile land and natural beauty.
early 1800’s
Pace’s Gap
Before becoming Saluda, the area was known as Pace’s Gap, named for a local family who operated an inn serving travelers and livestock moving through the mountain pass.
year 1878
The Railroad Changes Everything
The arrival of the Asheville and Spartanburg Railroad transformed the community. The railroad included the legendary Saluda Grade, the steepest standard-gauge mainline railroad grade in the United States—an engineering marvel of its time.
year 1881
Saluda Is Chartered
Saluda was officially chartered as a town in 1881. With the railroad came growth, commerce, and visitors escaping the summer heat of the lowlands.

A Mountain Retreat
Saluda became a popular summer destination, known for its cool mountain air, welcoming inns, and charming Main Street. Many of the historic buildings from this era still stand today.
