The historic Saluda Grade
The Saluda Grade is one of the most remarkable pieces of railroad history in Western North Carolina, and a defining part of Saluda’s story. Completed in 1878 as part of the route connecting Spartanburg, South Carolina, with Asheville, North Carolina, the railroad had to overcome the dramatic rise of the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The solution was a steep stretch of track climbing from the Tryon area toward Saluda, ultimately earning recognition as the steepest mainline standard-gauge railroad grade in the United States, with portions reaching a grade of nearly 5 percent.
For generations, the railroad shaped life in Saluda. Passenger trains brought visitors from the hot lowlands of the Carolinas to the cooler mountain air, helping transform the small community into a popular summer destination filled with inns, boarding houses, shops, and restaurants. At the same time, freight trains carried goods through the mountains along a route that became legendary among railroaders. The steep descent was demanding and sometimes dangerous, leading to specialized operating procedures and safety measures unique to the Grade.
Regular rail traffic over the Saluda Grade ended in 2001, but the railroad’s influence remains visible throughout town; from Saluda’s historic architecture and downtown streets to the stories preserved at the Saluda Historic Depot & Museum. Today, the historic rail corridor is entering a new chapter with plans for the Saluda Grade Trail, a proposed rail trail that would preserve the route while creating new opportunities to experience the landscape, communities, and railroad history that have made the Saluda Grade famous for nearly 150 years.
